Sinusitis & Actified Medications at Nighttime

Sinusitis & actified medications at nighttime are over the counter antihistamines like Benadryl which also act as a sleep aid.  An antihistamine is a pharmaceutical drug that inhibits the production of histamine by blocking histamine receptors.  Antihistamine’s are used to treat allergy symptoms such as runny nose, itchy throat, sneezing and watery eyes and are easily available without a prescription.  Allergy symptoms can trigger sinusitis and are commonly taken in combination with other medications during the course of a sinusitis infection.  The antihistamine disrupts the allergic reaction, allowing for the body to begin the healing process, at least temporarily.  Antihistamines are often made with a decongestant to assist in drying out the sinus and nasal passages.  Decongestants are typically either sedating or stimulating.  The stimulating decongestants have properties that can cause sleeplessness, anxiety, rapid heartbeat and jitteriness, while the sedating decongestants can cause blurred vision, drowsiness, or sleepiness.

Cold & allergy: the culprits

Sinusitis develops when there is existing inflammation from a cold or allergy, and an antihistamine is often used in combination if the sinusitis infection was triggered by an allergy.  Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses that is usually caused by a blockage in the sinus cavity by foreign debris.  The result of having a blockage of bacteria, fungi or virus is excess mucus production in the sinus cavities and inflammation due to the pathogens attacking the sinus cavity openings.

·         When the sinus cavity openings are attacked this leads to a more serious sinus infection.  When bacteria get into the sinus cavities, they attack the swelling of the cavity lining, causing more inflammation.  During a sinusitis infection, the cilia which are small hairs in the nasal passageways cannot perform their function of removing the debris that is blocked inside the sinus cavity.   There are a myriad of symptoms that take place with a sinusitis infection.  Common symptoms of a sinusitis infection include: cough, upper respiratory congestion, postnasal drip, nasal discharge, fever, facial pain and facial pressure.  At night, the sinusitis symptoms can worsen when laying down as the mucus and phlegm settle back into the sinuses and throat allowing for congestion, blocked airways and nasal discharge to take place.  A nighttime decongestant, like Actifed, will often be used to ensure a good night’s sleep due to the sedating properties.

Decongestants

·         The purpose of a decongestant is to allow for easy breathing during a sinus infection, unblocking the airways.  Oral and spray decongestants are also frequently recommended to alleviate sinusitis symptoms that developed from allergies or colds.  Decongestants function by shrinking swollen mucous membranes that are in the nasal passageways and sinus cavity openings.  In addition, a decongestant can also assist in shortening the course of the illness by shrinking the ostia, allowing the mucus to drain from the sinus cavity.  Spray decongestants  are also available and provide immediate relief, but due to the active ingredient oxymetazoline or phenylephrine can become habit forming as well as inducing a rebound effect.  Oral decongestants rely on the blood vessels to deliver medication through the blood stream to the infected sinus area, making them marginally effective in providing relief.  If spray decongestants are used for too long and the medication wears off, the swelling in the nasal cavity returns and is more severe than it was prior to the last application of decongestant.  Hence, a dependency on nasal sprays can easily develop which may require steroids to assist with the withdrawal period as well as reducing inflammation.  The rebound effect from a decongestant spray can occur for anyone using a decongestant spray from a bad cold to an acute sinusitis infection.
