Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Acute Chronic Sinusitis Problems

  

            Sinusitis is a condition of the sinuses which is caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities.  When a person has a cold or allergy, the sinus cavity lining becomes swollen.  When bacteria get into the sinus cavities and attack the swollen lining, greater inflammation occurs causing the cilia to no longer flush out the bacteria and mucus, therefore they become trapped and the sinusitis infection begins.  When the sinusitis lasts for less then twelve weeks it is considered acute sinusitis.  Some of the symptoms that occur with acute sinusitis are cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip.  When the infection lasts for more than twelve weeks, it is known as chronic sinusitis.  Some additional problems that may occur with chronic sinusitis are loss of sense of taste and smell and the person may become fatigued.

 

            There are several different treatment forms for sinusitis.  Frequently, physicians will prescribe oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on most types of infections by flowing through the blood stream to the infected area.  In the sinus cavities however, there are only a small amount of blood vessels which causes problems when it comes to medication being delivered to the sinusitis infection.  Nasal sprays are another commonly used treatment though they may only offer relief to the lower part of the sinuses since their particle is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection.
