Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Acute Sinusitis Problems Treatment

        

        Sinusitis is an inflammation condition in the sinus cavities.  When a person has existing swelling of the sinus cavities, which is often caused by a cold or allergy, that becomes attacked by bacteria, greater inflammation takes place, causing the cilia to not function correctly by not flushing out the trapped bacteria and mucus.  When the sinusitis infection lasts for less then twelve weeks it is considered acute sinusitis.  Some of the problems that a person may have with acute sinusitis are cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, postnasal drip, and green nasal discharge.  When the infection lasts for more than twelve weeks it is considered chronic and can have added problems such as loss of sense of taste and smell and they may become fatigued.

 

            There are many forms of treatment for chronic and acute sinusitis.  One commonly used treatment is over the counter and prescribed nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays only can offer relief to the lower part of the sinuses since their particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinuses and up to the sinusitis infection.  Another frequently used treatment is oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on infections by flowing through the blood stream to the infected area.  One of the problems with using oral antibiotics on a sinusitis infection are that the sinus cavities have only a small amount of blood vessels, so it is difficult for an effective amount of medication to be delivered.
