Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Antibiotics Help Sinusitis

 

Sinusitis is often caused by an infection in the nasal or sinus passages. The infection can be caused by viruses, bacteria or other kinds of infectious organisms. Viral infections usually resolve on their own after some time (a week or so). All you need is enough rest and plenty of fluids. Bacterial infections on the other hand, usually need to be given more attention, and even medication like antibiotics.

 

Many people take medications to relieve their sinusitis symptoms. And due to the popular notion that antibiotics help sinusitis symptoms, adults most often ask their physicians to be prescribed with the drug.

 

In some cases, antibiotics may help sinusitis. But this is not the case for all types of sinusitis. Some sinusitis cases may be caused by a viral infection. When this is the case, as mentioned above, antibiotics are not needed. Only bacterial infections are helped with sinusitis.

 

The usual round of antibiotics last anywhere from 7 to 21 days, with the drug taken three times a day (depending on the dosage) continuously. For best results, antibiotics should be taken exactly as prescribed and without missing a dose. Relief may not be immediately felt. It could take about three days before you feel any improvement in your symptoms. But when you start to feel better, do not stop taking the antibiotics just yet. There is still a chance for the infection to return if it is not treated right.

 

But if you do not feel any improvement in your symptoms after 7-10 days, see your health specialist. A different type of antibiotic may be prescribed for you or another course of treatment could be taken because antibiotics may not have been right for your condition in the first place.

 

Antibiotics are generally safe to be taken. There are minimal side effects to taking them. But overuse of antibiotics can result in bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics.  So it is important to determine if you indeed have a need for antibiotics before deciding to take these.
