Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection
It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants. Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication. |
Over-diagnosis of sinusitis among children happens more often nowadays. At the first sign of green or yellow mucous, many parents and doctors automatically think that the child has a sinus infection. Actually, more often than not, these children just have viral upper respiratory tract infections or common colds. These generally do not require much medical treatment other than over the counter decongestants and plenty of rest.
The symptoms of a viral sinus infection and a bacterial sinus infection are similar. Both usually begin with a runny nose. A viral infection would be characterized with the mucous turning yellow or green after two or three days. With a bacterial infection, the mucous is clear or white.
Other similar symptoms can include fever, headache and decreased activity. Facial pain and swelling are not always present in children. These symptoms usually worsen over five to seven days then start to resolve if your condition is viral.
When considering if a child has a sinus infection, it is recommended that the diagnosis be made clinically by seeing a doctor. It is not necessary to get sinus x-ray, especially in children under six years of age. But if the child has persistent or recurrent symptoms, let your doctor know so the sinus problem can be investigated by doing further tests.
If you or a child's infection is caused by a virus, antibiotics will not help at all with your condition. And when antibiotics are used unnecessarily, it is more likely that a second infection can develop with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics. This development can make sinusitis much more difficult to treat.
For children who are not at risk of having an infection by resistant bacteria, a regular dose of amoxicillin given twice a day for seven days is usually prescribed. If the child is not improving with amoxicillin, a higher dose or a different antibiotic may be given. Children that fail to respond to two antibiotics should be referred to an ear/nose/throat (ENT) specialist for further treatment options.
