Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Antibiotics Used for Sinusitis

If you suffer from sinusitis, it is important to know the options for treating your sinusitis symptoms. Most people would want to minimize using medications as a first line of defense. But treating their symptoms the natural (non-medicated) way is not always effective or lasting. There are several types of medicines available to help ease annoying sinusitis symptoms like headaches, nasal congestion or excessive mucus secretion and cough.

Sinusitis is usually diagnosed clinically. It is wise to get checked by your doctor if your symptoms are not getting better after some time. Bacterial and viral acute types of sinusitis are difficult to differentiate. One way to check which sinusitis you have is to observe the duration of your symptoms. If your symptoms last less than seven days, your sinusitis is most probably viral. If after seven days your condition worsens or has no improvements, you may have acute bacterial sinusitis.

There are over the counter medicines that can relieve some of your symptoms associated with sinusitis. These are usually antihistamines, decongestants and pain relievers. There is no direct cure to viral sinusitis, so you would have to do with the above mentioned medicines to relieve you of your sinus troubles.

For bacterial infections, antibiotics are used to treat sinusitis. The most common antibiotic prescribed by doctors is amoxicillin. This is because of its high success rate, minimal side effects and general compatibility to patients. However, if you have allergies to amoxicillin, a different antibiotic may be prescribed for you.

A round of antibiotics ranges from seven to 14 days of continuous intake. It takes several days for the medication to reach its greatest effect. It is important to take antibiotics without missing a dose for the whole duration of your prescription. Even if you feel better, do not stop taking antibiotics because there is a possibility of the infection re-occurring.

If after completing the course of antibiotics used to treat sinusitis, you still do not see any improvement in your condition, talk to your doctor. Another type of antibiotics or other treatment programs may be prescribed for you.

To help treat your sinusitis symptoms, Sinus Dynamics has developed a state of the art aerosolizing device that comes with the right mix and dosage of medication such as antibiotics for your sinusitis. Ask your doctor if Sinus Dynamics can help with your sinusitis.
