Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Antibiotics Used in Sinusitis

Because sinusitis symptoms mimic those of a common cold or a simple viral respiratory condition, most of these symptoms can resolve on their own. But it is still better to see a doctor if your symptoms do not get better after some time. Sinusitis is often diagnosed clinically and once diagnosed, your doctor can give you a prescription for a course of treatment.

In most cases, antibiotics are used for sinusitis treatment. Antibiotics seek to kill the bacteria that cause sinusitis infection. The most common antibiotic prescribed is amoxicillin because it has few notable side effects and a high percentage success rate. However, not all patients can take amoxicillin. Some may be allergic to it, so a different antibiotic is prescribed.

Relief does not occur instantly once you have started your course of antibiotics. You have to give the medication some time to treat the infection. But there should be improvements in your symptoms in about three days.

Even if you start to feel better or even feel completely cured of your symptoms, do not stop your course of antibiotics in the middle of treatment. This is to make sure that infection will not have a chance to come back. For best results, antibiotics should be taken exactly as prescribed without missing a single dose.

Although antibiotics used for sinusitis present a high success rate, it does not come with zero percent chances of unwanted side effects. Allergic reactions may occur if the wrong kind of antibiotic is prescribed. General side effects for antibiotics include soft stools or diarrhea and stomach upset.

If after more than three days, you do not feel any kind of improvement in your condition or your symptoms become worse, talk to your health professional immediately. You may need to start another kind of treatment. It may be that the antibiotics prescribed to you are not the right one for your infection or antibiotics may be affecting you negatively due to other ailments you have.

Sinus Dynamics has developed a state of the art sinusitis relief program. An easy to use nebulizer can be used with antibiotics or other medications depending on your need or prescription.
