Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Antibiotics Used to Treat Sinusitis

Most people around the world each year experience some type of sinusitis in one way or another. Being plagued with sinusitis symptoms can be a really unpleasant experience. Headaches, stuffy or runny nose, congestion, facial pains - these are just some of the symptoms that provide immense discomfort when suffering sinusitis.

Since sinusitis is diagnosed clinically, if your symptoms last for more than seven days and there are no improvements on your health, you have to see your doctor to know if what you have is bacterial sinusitis or just a bad case of your everyday colds. The difference will determine what treatment option should be advised for you.

Once diagnosed that your sinusitis is indeed caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be used to treat sinusitis.

Antibiotics need to be prescribed by your doctor. The dosage, course or duration of your antibiotics treatment is based on the severity and kind of sinusitis you have. These will also depend on your history with antibiotics, and your medical background. But usually, antibiotic treatments last anywhere from a seven day course to 14 days, with the medication taken three times a day.

Oral antibiotics are the easiest used to treat sinusitis. The medication is taken three times a day, usually after every meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) with the intervals being not less than six hours. Oral antibiotics take some time to be effective. But general improvement from your sinusitis symptoms should be felt in about three days.

Intravenous antibiotics provide a more instant effect since the medication is injected straight into the bloodstream, allowing immediate circulation and treatment action. But intravenous antibiotics are not always readily available that is why not a lot of people opt for this treatment option.

Aerosolized antibiotics are popular because of the high success rate and the instant relief from symptoms when using these. These antibiotics are inhaled through the nose or mouth, allowing the medication to be applied topically onto the infected areas. The antibiotics can be administered with a nebulizer or a nose spray.

Sinus Dynamics offers you the latest technology in the field of aerosolized medicine. The Sinus Dynamics nebulizer delivers a fine mist of custom compound medication in the right dosage. The medical equipment is lightweight and convenient to bring with you wherever you go. Talk to your doctor today and ask if Sinus Dynamics is right for your sinusitis.
