Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Antibiotics for Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis is one of the most common chronic conditions affecting millions of people all over the world. It is an inflammation of the sinuses which causes nasal congestion, headaches, facial pressure, and other pains in neighboring areas such as sore throat and runny nose. This type of sinusitis can last for more than twelve weeks, or it may be a recurring condition that will upset you over and over again within a long period of time.

Most people live with this condition with an attitude of ignorance and forced tolerance. Notice that chronic sinusitis symptoms are similar with symptoms of other illnesses, particularly of other upper respiratory tract infections. A lot of times, people would choose to address each symptom individually. Or they would just wait till the symptoms go away on their own, since they do not seem to be severe or life-threatening. They forget that it is better to find the main cause for all their sinus troubles and target the cause rather than just reacting against the symptoms as they come.

Antibiotics are among the most common medications prescribed for sinusitis. These are well known for fighting infections in general. But you have to be aware of their proper use. As indicated above, there are those who turn to whatever available cure without fully understanding their conditions first and targeting the cause of their sickness. With antibiotics, you cannot do that. Instead, talk to your doctor and discuss if antibiotics are really what you need. If the answer is yes, then find out the best way for you to take antibiotics.

For chronic sinusitis, doctors usually recommend taking antibiotics for three to four weeks. They also stress the importance of continuing with the medication even after all the sinusitis symptoms have gone. There is a danger of becoming immune to the healing powers of antibiotics if they are taken the wrong way. So follow instructions carefully and dutifully.

Sinus Dynamics has a nebulizer that can contain antibiotics and other kinds of sinusitis medications. This device is a great tool to have in making your treatment program more bearable. Ask your doctor or anyone from the Sinus Dynamics team if this nebulizer is suitable for your sinus needs. Instant results are offered, and in no time, your chronic sinusitis can be gone completely.
