Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Antibiotics in Relation to Sinusitis

Sinusitis is one of the most commonly diagnosed respiratory ailments in the United States affection 30 to 40 million people each year.

Sinusitis begins with an inflammation of the mucous membranes in your sinuses. The sinuses are the air filled passages around your nose and throat. The inflammation causes fluid buildup, eventually plugging the sinus cavities and preventing normal mucous drainage.

Oftentimes, this inflammation of the sinuses is caused by an infection. If the infection is viral or is caused by a common cold, your symptoms more likely will resolve on their own. With the help of over the counter medications like decongestants or pain reliever and sufficient rest, you can find comfort from your symptoms while having sinusitis.

When your infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat your sinusitis. Treatment with antibiotics in relation to sinusitis has been a common choice for curing sinusitis sufferers. Since the cause of infection is bacterial, and antibiotics are designed to fight and kill bacteria, this type of treatment has been proven effective for most patients.

The usual prescription for antibiotic treatment in relation to sinusitis is taking the medication for a certain period of time continuously. The duration is anywhere from a minimum of seven days to a maximum of 14 days. If antibiotics are prescribed for more than 14 days, there is a chance that your sinusitis is so severe, that is why strong medication is needed for a long period of time.

But you have to be careful when taking antibiotics. Overuse may lead to antibiotic resistance. That means that the bacteria may not respond to the antibiotics anymore.

There are minimal side effects when taking antibiotics. Some of these are stomach upset, diarrhea and sometimes fungal or yeast infection in the mouth, digestive tract or vagina. See your doctor and stop taking the medication immediately if any of these side effects develop.

Sinus Dynamics developed a state of the art treatment program offering you relief from your sinusitis symptoms almost instantly. Utilizing modern aerosolized technology, an easy to use, lightweight nebulizer was designed to give you the right dosage of medication when and where you need it. Talk to your doctor about this to find out if you can take your antibiotics the Sinus Dynamics way.
