Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Antibiotics to Treat Sinusitis

Antibiotics are often prescribed by doctors to patients with clinically diagnosed bacterial infections. The most common cause of sinusitis is an infection in the sinus cavities. However, it is not all the time that the infection causing your sinusitis is bacterial. One other infection is a virus.

Viral conditions resolve on their own without little or no need for medical treatment. But if your symptoms are persistent and last for more than a week, chances are, your infection may be caused by bacteria.

There are many options to treating your sinusitis. In most cases, antibiotics are prescribed if you have specific findings of persistent purulent nasal discharge and facial pain or tenderness which are not improving after seven days.  Those with severe symptoms of rhinosinusitis, regardless of duration, are also given antibiotics. But again, only with bacterial cases.

Other medicines, such as decongestants, inhaled corticosteroids, and medicines that help thin the mucous, may be prescribed to improve your sinusitis symptoms.

When using antibiotics to treat sinusitis, best results are expected when the medication is taken exactly as prescribed. Antibiotics are to be taken continuously for a certain period of time. Missing a dosage would be an incomplete treatment and you risk reoccurrence of the infection.

If you are taking oral antibiotics, it would take a while before you notice any improvements in your condition. That is because you would have to wait for the medication to circulate your system and target the infected areas. Improvements may be felt in about three days into the course of treatment. If there is no improvement after a week or when you get through your whole course of antibiotics without feeling better, consult your health professional. There may be other antibiotics that can be prescribed for you.

The risk of side effects when taking antibiotics to treat sinusitis is minimal. Common but mild side effects include an upset stomach, diarrhea and yeast infections. Rare side effects include allergic reactions, prolonged diarrhea, and inflammation or infection of intestines. If you experience any of these rare side effects, stop taking the antibiotics immediately.
