Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Bacterial Sinusitis Infection

The inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages is called sinusitis or sinus infection.  It can be categorized as acute (sudden onset) or chronic (long-term and the most common type).  There are many causes of sinusitis, among which are viruses, allergies, pollutants (smoke, dust and other irritants), and bacteria, which cause bacterial sinusitis infections.

Bacterial sinusitis infection is very similar to a viral infection, although the former lasts longer and is usually more severe.  The different types of bacteria that can cause acute sinusitis are streptococcus pneumonia, haemophilus influenza, and moraxella catarrhalis bacteria.  Along with anaerobes and staphylococcus aureus, these microorganisms can cause chronic sinusitis.  Fungi, most common in people with diseases that weaken the immune system (e.g., leukemia, diabetes, and AIDS), also cause chronic sinusitis.

Symptoms of bacterial sinusitis infection include pain or pressure on one side of the face, swelling around the eye area, postnasal drip, which may cause dry cough, and toothache in the upper jaw in the absence of dental problems.  If these symptoms are severe, or have been present for more than 10 days, proper and urgent medical attention is recommended.

Once the type of bacteria that caused the infection is determined, the doctor can prescribe the required treatment.  This kind of infection can also affect children, although the symptoms are less specific.  These include persistent nasal discharge, daytime cough for more than 10 days, irritability, vomiting, and gagging on mucus.  Medical attention is recommended if a child has fever of 104 degrees or above.

Sinusitis caused by bacteria can mostly be cured by antibiotics, unlike viral infection, which can simply be cured by taking over-the-counter drugs (i.e., acetaminophen, ibuprofen, decongestants, etc.), drinking plenty of liquids, avoiding exposure to smoke, dust and other irritants, and getting lots of rest.

Additional medications include decongestants for nasal congestion relief, and painkillers.   If these medications do not cure bacterial sinusitis infection, the doctor could prescribe oral steroids, which, however, are known to have side effects.

With the latest technology and up-to-date scientific research used to help find sinusitis cure, Sinus Dynamics provides treatment for different kinds of sinus infections.  One such treatment involves the use of nasal sprays, which release medication in the form of fine mists to the sinuses and nasal cavity.  It also offers physician-evaluated and prescribed custom-compounded medications, including anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal medications, as well as antibiotics, all known cures for sinusitis infection.
