Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Bronchial Sinusitis


A sinusitis infection occurs when the sinuses become inflamed due to a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavity. This generally happens when a person has a cold or allergy that causes swelling and bacteria attack the already inflamed cavity lining, and as a result more swelling occurs and the bacteria and mucus cannot be washed out by way of the cilia. Bronchial problems are similar to sinusitis in the fact that they both involve inflammation, cough, and mucus production.  Sinusitis also often exists with bronchial hyper responsiveness. Some of the sinusitis symptoms are congestion, cough, facial pain, green nasal discharge, and headache. 
 

Common treatments for bronchial problems include inhaled medications and anti-inflammatories.  Anti-inflammatories along with antibiotics are also used in sinusitis.  Oral medications, such as antibiotics, work by passing through the blood stream to the area of infection.  In the sinus cavities however, there are only a small amount of blood vessels, so the oral medications cannot efficiently deliver enough of the medication to that area.  Nasal sprays are also regularly used treatments for sinusitis.  Nasal sprays also cannot fully deliver the correct amount of medication but this is due to the fact that the nasal sprays particle sizes are to large, and they cannot make it through the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity to get to the infection.
