Sinusitis Cause of Major Indigestion Problems

Indigestion also known as Dyspepsia refers to a condition of impaired digestion and is characterized by chronic or recurrent pain in the abdomen.  Indigestion is a common problem that is characterized by bloating, belching, nausea, or heartburn.  Some of the symptoms of sinusitis can contribute to indigestion.  In particular, postnasal drip  that develops when there is excessive mucus production by the nasal mucosa that is secreted into the rear of the nasal cavity into the nasopharynx, usually as a result of a cold or an allergy.  Postnasal drip can contribute to nausea as mucus that travels down the throat into the stomach area can cause upset stomach.  There are other factors that can cause sinusitis or coexist with a sinusitis infection that also impact indigestion.  Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or Acid reflux, a chronic condition that occurs when stomach acid passes up through the esophagus often causing pain and / or tissue damage.  Some cases of acid reflux also develop further complications such as esophagitis.  Sinusitis may develop from acid reflux as well, as acid can potentially enter the nasal airways due to the close proximity of the nasal passages and the mouth which are directly connected.  Recent research indicates that sinusitis as well as some other conditions such as chronic ear infections are due to acid reflux, under an atypical diagnositic criteria.  Therefore, GERD and acid reflux are factors that impact and create Sinusitis Cause of Major Indigestion Problems as well as post nasal drip and excess production of phlegm.

Acid reflux develops when there are abnormal relaxation changes in the lower esophageal sphincter that typically act as a barrier between the top of the stomach and the esophagus.  This can cause inflammation in areas that are not protected against gastric acid exposure.  There is a co-morbidity with indigestion / acid reflux and sinusitis, stemming from the inflammation that develop from gastric acid in the throat.  There is not a single medication that can treat both sinusitis and acid reflux.  Physicians typically recommend some form of antacid to neutralize and reduce stomach upset with over the counter medications such as Pepcid or Tagamet.  When over the counter measures fail to treat indigestion, a prescription medication that can reduce the stomach’s production of acid, like Reglan or Protonix will be prescribed.  Cases that are not responsive to medication and diet change can result in repairing the esophageal sphincter.  Fortunately, there are many prescription drugs and over the counter antacids that help relieve the symptoms of acid reflux.

  • ·         Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses that is usually caused by a blockage in the sinus cavity by foreign debris.  The result of having a blockage of bacteria, fungi or virus is excess mucus production in the sinus cavities and inflammation due to the pathogens attacking the sinus cavity openings.
  • ·         When the sinus cavity openings are attacked this leads to a more serious sinus infection.  When bacteria gets into the sinus cavities, they attack the swelling of the cavity lining, causing more inflammation.
  • ·         During a sinusitis infection, the cilia which are small hairs in the nasal passageways cannot perform their function of removing the debris that is blocked inside the sinus cavity.   There are a myriad of symptoms that take place with a sinusitis infection.  Common symptoms of a sinusitis infection include: cough, upper respiratory congestion, postnasal drip, nasal discharge, fever, facial pain and facial pressure.  At night, the sinusitis symptoms can worsen when laying down, as mucus and phlegm settle back into the sinuses and throat allowing for congestion, blocked airways and nasal discharge to take place.
