Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Child Sinusitis No Antibiotics

When a child has a runny nose, parents immediately think it is a sinus infection. There are many things besides a sinus infection that can cause a runny nose, including a simple cold or allergy. If your child has a lingering runny nose and it is clear, it may just be allergies.

Child sinusitis is often overdiagnosed. Many parents also assume that a child has a sinus infection at the first sign of green or yellow mucous. In this case, antibiotics are often asked to be prescribed for their child. But often, it is not a sinus infection, rather it is a viral upper respiratory tract infection. Because the infection is viral, no antibiotics are needed to treat the infection. These kinds of infections are 20-200 times more common than a bacterial infection.

Like the common cold, upper respiratory tract infections do not require much medical treatment. Viral conditions or symptoms caused by viruses usually resolve on their own with enough rest.

Child sinusitis can also be viral. But no antibiotics are needed to treat these cases. Antibiotics are medicines that help to fight bacterial infections.

Bacterial sinusitis is clinically diagnosed, especially in children. The diagnosis should be based on symptoms that your child has. It is not necessary to get a sinus x-ray, especially in children under six years of age.  The diagnosis of a sinus infection is determined more by how long your child has had symptoms and how bad they are.

When diagnosed with bacterial sinusitis, doctors often prescribe a standard treatment schedule of 7, 10, 14, 21 or 28 days of antibiotics. It might be best to treat a child continuously until he or she has been free of symptoms for at least seven days. Since most children show improvement in three days, this usually results in 10 days of antibiotics. But if it takes 5-7 days or 10 days for your child to get better, then 10 days of antibiotics might not be enough, especially if your child has recurrent or chronic sinusitis.

For fast acting sinusitis relief, consider Sinus Dynamics for sufferers of all ages. Sinus Dynamics offers a program with a treatment time in less than five minutes. By using an aerosolizing device containing custom compound medication, the source of the problem is targeted directly for fast, immediate relief with better results and very few side effects.
