Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Chronic Sinusitis, Mucous, in Days

Sinusitis can be categorized according to how long you have had it. If you have been experiencing the symptoms of sinusitis for more than twelve weeks, then it is safe to assume that you have a more serious type of sinusitis, which is known as chronic sinusitis. If your symptoms go away in the course of several days, you are in no danger from chronic sinusitis. You simply have a mild form of acute sinusitis.

Sinusitis may be caused by allergies, respiratory tract infections (which thicken the membranes of your sinus and prevent you from naturally draining your mucous), immunodeficiency diseases such as HIV and cystic fibrosis (which thickens your body secretions, including mucous), and fungus. Once you feel symptoms of sinusitis, cure it while it is still acute sinusitis rather than waiting until it has become chronic sinusitis.

The common symptoms of sinusitis include stuffy nose, sore throat, headaches, coughing, fatigue, and facial pain. Most cases of sinusitis go away in several days if treated promptly with simple cures such as over-the-counter medication (i.e., ibuprofen, decongestants, antihistamines, etc.), increased intake of food that helps to loosen the hold that mucous has on your sinuses (i.e., food containing vitamin C, spicy foods, hot tea, hot soup, etc.), and lots of rest.

If these cures fail to alleviate your sinusitis symptoms in several days or several weeks, then your sinusitis has advanced from acute sinusitis to chronic sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis involves all of the symptoms of acute sinusitis but may last for more than three months.

Another method to cure chronic sinusitis is to make use of nasal sprays such as one that Sinus Dynamics offers. Sinus Dynamics' aerosolizing device utilizes the latest in medical technology. It releases a fine mist of medication into your nasal passages and clears the mucous so that your sinusitis is cured in a few days. Sinus Dynamics has a team of pharmacists who are eager to help you determine what the best medication is for you to use against your type of sinusitis. Using the Sinus Dynamics nebulizer may be the difference between your acute sinusitis becoming chronic sinusitis and curing your sinusitis before it gets a chance to get more serious.
