Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Cough is Worse After Antibiotics for Sinusitis

Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses. The sinuses, when inflamed, become blocked with mucous and can become infected some more. Generally, sinusitis is caused by a viral, bacterial or fungal infection.

Acute sinusitis lasts anywhere from two to eight weeks. Symptoms include headaches, slight fever, pressure in some areas of the face, a persistent cough and nasal congestion with mucous secretions. Treatment for acute sinusitis may vary. Home or natural remedies are always available.

Chronic sinusitis is a much more serious type of sinusitis. It can last for more than three months, and may keep on coming back even after feeling relief from symptoms for a while. Chronic sinusitis may produce less severe symptoms but it can gradually cause damage to the tissues of the sinuses.

For a bacterial sinusitis, whether acute of chronic, it is always best to treat it with a round of antibiotics. Antibiotics for sinusitis will depend on your diagnosis so it is always best to see your doctor so you can get a proper prescription for your treatment.

A round of antibiotics usually lasts seven to 14 days, with the medication taken three times a day. Even if you start to feel better, you should not stop taking the antibiotics until you are done with what is prescribed. The infection can come back or even worsen when antibiotics is used improperly.

Sometimes, symptoms may not go away after taking a course of antibiotics. Other times, some antibiotics can cure only particular symptoms and not all sinusitis ailments. For another case, if your cough is worse after antibiotics for sinusitis, then the medicine you are taking may not be the right one for the type of sinusitis you have. Talk to your health professional for other options for antibiotic treatment.

If after changing medications, your cough or other symptoms are even worse, you may need to turn to other types of treatment, like sinus surgery.
