Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Cure Chronic Sinusitis

Before you consider any treatment for your sinusitis, it is important to determine what kind of sinusitis you have. The symptoms are similar. Runny nose, congestion in the nasal passages, mucous build up, headaches, pressure in the eyes, cheeks, nose or one side of the head. If these symptoms persist for more than months at a time, you may have chronic sinusitis.

It can be difficult to cure chronic sinusitis because treatment may require coordinated efforts of several specialists to treat all of the aspects of the disease. To cure chronic sinusitis is similar to treating acute sinusitis. Allergy testing, desensitization, and/or surgery may be needed if antibiotics treatment fails to cure chronic sinusitis.

Bacterial chronic sinusitis and non infectious chronic sinusitis are two kinds of chronic sinusitis. There are different medical treatments for both. Topical or oral steroids or nasal wash treatments deliver a good response for people with non infectious chronic sinusitis. Treatments depend on the severity of your chronic sinusitis infection.

One of the most prescribed treatments is oral antibiotics. These are medications that are taken daily for a continuous period of two to three weeks. If symptoms persist, your otolaryngologist may take a sample of the infection for culture in order to prescribe medication specifically designed to cure the chronic sinusitis infection you have.

Antibiotics are also available in the nebulized kind. This treatment allows the antibiotics to be applied topically to the infected area by breathing in the antibiotics through your nose. Like oral antibiotics, this treatment takes place over a continuous period of two to three weeks.

Or you may opt for intravenous antibiotics. The antibiotics are directly injected in your bloodstream. This allows for the medication to circulate your system immediately. This type of treatment generally lasts for four to six weeks.

Sinus surgery is usually the last resort to cure chronic sinusitis. This is done endoscopically, which means that the doctor does the surgery without making any facial incisions. A vast majority of people who underwent surgery have had fewer symptoms and an improved quality of life.

If you are considering nebulized antibiotics, Sinus Dynamics offers an easy to use nebulizer without the hassle of complicated procedures and instructions, and delivers quick sinus relief. Sinusitis authorities are available for consultation, and customer representatives are more than willing to assist you in getting to know more about our products and services.
