Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Ethmoid Frontal Sinusitis Antibiotics

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. The ethmoid sinus is one of the paranasal sinuses that are often inflamed due to a sinus infection. The ethmoid sinus lie between the upper parts of the nasal cavities and the orbits, and are separated from these cavities by a thin bony laminæ.

Acute ethmoid frontal sinusitis can be bilateral or unilateral. It can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Oftentimes, surgery is needed when the sinus condition is unresponsive to medical treatment.

There are different options to treat your symptoms before resorting to surgery. Surgery is usually considered as a last resort of treatment. For instance, with proper diagnosis, you can opt to treat ethmoid frontal sinusitis with antibiotics.

Sinusitis can be treated with antibiotics, but more often than not, only when the cause of is a bacterial infection. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, there are different types of antibiotic treatments that your doctor can prescribe for you.

Oral antibiotics are the most commonly used antibiotics. A number of broad-spectrum antibiotics can be prescribed where you take the pills daily for approximately seven to 14 days. It takes a few days for improvements to be evident when taking oral antibiotics. If there is no improvement at all after seven days, a specialist may need to take a culture to determine the bacteria causing your infection. Then your doctor can prescribe a narrow-spectrum antibiotic to target the specific bacteria.

Intravenous antibiotics work faster than the oral ones because they are injected directly to your veins and this method allows the medication to circulate your bloodstream right away. This type of antibiotics is not normally readily available though, that is why most patients consider this a secondary or alternative option of treatment.

Nebulized antibiotics are getting more and more popular because of their high percentage of success in treating sinusitis. The medication is inhaled through the nose or mouth. This allows topical administration to the infected areas, giving you immediate relief from your symptoms. A nebulizer, a contraption which emits steam to be inhaled, is used for this method. Medication can also be administered through a nose spray.

Sinus Dynamics has developed a modern nebulizer to bring you comfort and relief from your sinusitis symptoms. For more information, ask the sinus experts that are always standing by to assist you.
