Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Guide to Antibiotics for Sinusitis

Most people all over the United States and the world experience some kind of sinus infection once in a while. Since sinusitis should be clinically diagnosed, the best way to seek treatment is to see your doctor. Oftentimes, sinusitis is the result of an infection in the sinus or nasal cavities. It could be caused by a viral infection that would resolve on its own in a few days. But it could also be caused by a bacterial infection which would need to be treated with antibiotics.

Antibiotics are used to target or fight bacterial infections. These antibiotics are prescribed by your doctor once it is determined that your infection is indeed caused by bacteria. Antibiotics, like any other medication, should be used with caution. Your doctor will give you specific instructions or a helpful guide to taking antibiotics for sinusitis, and you should follow these dutifully.

Antibiotics are to be taken continuously over a period of time. The duration of your course of treatment with antibiotics would depend on the severity of your symptoms, the specific antibiotic you are given, and/or the type of bacteria infecting your sinuses.

Improvements from sinusitis symptoms will not be evident right away because antibiotics need some time to circulate your system and be effective. Generally, you will start to feel better in about three days into the course of treatment. Even if you start to feel better, you should not stop taking antibiotics because if you do so, there is a risk that the infection might come back.

Antibiotics should be used exactly as directed for best results. If there is no improvement in your condition after finishing your course, consult with your doctor. You may need to be prescribed a different antibiotic or a different kind of treatment.

There are different ways in taking antibiotics - oral, intravenous and aerosolized/nebulized. Listen to your doctor and learn about the medicine you are taking. No matter how you take your medication, it is always better to have a guide to antibiotics when taking these for sinusitis.

At Sinus Dynamics, a state of the art aerosolizing device is offered for providing sinusitis relief. Treatment programs can include custom compound medications without the hassle of complex equipment.
