Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

List of Antibiotics for Sinusitis

There is no one conclusive list of antibiotics for sinusitis. But you can definitely look into some names and options that are commonly prescribed by many doctors. You can research about these, and bring them to your doctor's attention if you want to know if any of these popular antibiotics can help in curing your sinusitis.

Let us first make it clear: antibiotics are prescribed only for sinusitis which has severe and/or chronic symptoms. Also, antibiotics target bacteria, some types of fungi, and parasites. If your sinusitis is viral or caused by other infections aside from those organisms mentioned above, you need to cross antibiotics off your list of sinusitis cures and find other treatment options.

Amoxicillin is the most common antibiotic prescribed for sinusitis. This is due to the effectiveness of the medication in relieving sinusitis symptoms with only a few side effects. Other antibiotics that can be added on the list for curing sinusitis are:

-          clavulanic acid, clarithromycin, cefuroxime axetil, loracarbef and levofloxacin - these are typically used for acute sinusitis; amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are also used for chronic sinusitis symptoms

-          antibiotic macrolides: taken in a long term, low dose treatment program - these are commonly used to substitute the use of other antibiotics which may cause allergic reactions to patients

-          betamethasone for chronic sinusitis

-          cefuroxime: effective in using it for children with sinusitis

Antibiotics should be chosen appropriately. Getting to know about antibiotics by yourself is a good start. But you still need to get a medical professional's advice on how you can apply these medications to your sinusitis condition. There are other factors to consider, such as your medical background (history with sinusitis, history with antibiotics, other present illnesses/conditions, etc) and your living/working environment. Your doctor can also further investigate what is best for your sinusitis by performing some medical tests.

After getting a prescription, learn your options for taking antibiotics. One way to take antibiotics is by using a nebulizer to topically apply the medication for your sinusitis. Sinus Dynamics has this device in a lightweight and convenient package that is being used by many patients. Sinusitis, allergy and rhinitis medications are distributed using this nebulizer. A fine mist of the medicine gets to the affected areas directly. In this way, infection is treated in a matter of minutes.
