Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Maxillary Sinusitis After Antibiotics No Relief

When the member-lined air spaces near the nose become infected and cause pain and discharge from the nose, you may have sinusitis. There are four pairs of sinuses lined to the bony structures around the nose - the maxillary, frontal, ethmoidal and sphenoidal sinuses.

Maxillary sinuses are located behind the cheek bones. If the pain is concentrated on the sinus cavities inside the cheekbones, under or around the eye, or around the upper teeth, you may have maxillary sinusitis. Other symptoms include inflammation or swelling of the area around the cheekbone, possible tooth pain, nasal discharge or post nasal drip and fever. Symptoms are sometimes worse when the head is upright. Conditions improve when you recline your position.

Antibiotics are the most popular medical treatment option for people suffering from sinusitis. That is why when someone experiences a runny nose, headache and facial pains, they immediately ask their doctors to prescribe antibiotics without even making sure that the infection is caused by bacteria. Antibiotics are only good for bacterial infections.

If you have maxillary sinusitis and get no relief after taking antibiotics, you may need to have a culture done to determine if the cause of your infection is indeed, bacterial. This process will also specify the type of bacterium affecting your sinuses.

Some patients are surprised to learn that they never needed antibiotics in the first place. There could be other reasons why they are experiencing no relief from their maxillary sinusitis. You have to observe how your body reacts to antibiotics. Maybe you are allergic to the medication you are taking, or maybe the bacteria in your system are already resistant to your medicine. Talk to your doctor if you feel you might have these concerns.

Recurring symptoms accompanied by bacterial infection usually require a stronger medical treatment program. Various medications can be given in larger doses for a longer period of time (up to four weeks) than required for a brief but severe bout of sinusitis. Your doctor may also recommend a continued use of a prescription nasal inhaler for several weeks to keep the inflammation down and prevent a recurrence.

Sinus Dynamic is known for their success in developing an aerosolizing device for sinusitis. A compound solution can be specially designed for your specific sinus treatment needs. Ask your doctor about the benefits that Sinus Dynamics can offer you.
