Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Medication Sinusitis


Sinusitis is a condition due to inflammation in the sinus cavities.  When bacteria attack the swelling from a cold or allergies on the cavity lining, more inflammation occurs and bacteria and mucus become trapped, causing the infection.  There are many symptoms of a sinusitis.  Some symptoms of sinusitis are postnasal drip, facial pain, cough, green mucus, and congestion.  Often times another symptom will be a sinus headache.  When the infection lasts for more then twelve weeks, then it is considered chronic and may have added symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell.  Medication can also sometimes cause sinusitis such as aspirin and topical nasal decongestants.  

There are several different kinds of sinusitis medications on the market to treat sinusitis.  One type of medication are oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work by flowing through the blood stream to the area of infection.  In the sinus cavities however, there are only a small amount of blood vessels so an efficient amount of medication cannot be delivered.  Another medication which is often used is over the counter and prescription nasal sprays.  The particle size of the nasal sprays is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities, so they may only offer relief to any congestion at the bottom of the sinuses.
