Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Nasal Infection

Nasal infection stems from a variety of bacteria and other infectious substances that lurk throughout our surroundings. It roughly affects 37 million Americans each year.

The cilia are the microscopic hairs that coat the mucus membranes and are responsible for pushing out dust, bacteria and mucus over their surfaces. In healthy people, our nasal cavity and the mucosal cells in the paranasal sinus continuously secrete a clear fluid. This is brought upon by the regular pulsation of the cilia on the surface of the mucosal cells. It moves backward from the paranasal sinus, through the nasal cavity, to the nasopharynx, then larynx, and then swallowed into the esophagus and stomach.

An average adult secretes about one liter of the mucus daily. This is needed to maintain the humidity in the nasal cavity and the inside of the paranasal sinus. The mucus absorbs the dusts and stimuli from the air, hence maintaining the health of the respiratory tract.

A nasal infection mostly occurs when the membrane in the nose and sinuses become irritated by allergies, pollutants, exposure to dry or cold air, or other numerous irritants. This irritation causes the membranes to become inflamed, thus resulting to irregular pulsating of the cilia. When this happens, the bacteria which could have been removed by the cilia start to invade the nose and sinuses and thereby result to an infection.

Contamination of the nasal passage turns the clear mucus into thick pus and/or causes the abnormal motion of the cilia. Both cases will result in a feeling of the mucus running backward, which causes rhino-sinusitis or various types of rhinitis. As mucus and other substances inhabit the nasal passages, the nose and sinuses are given a hard time and this causes pain.

Many people suffering from nasal infection knows how discomforting it is to be in that situation. Sinus Dynamics offers a variety of solutions for your nasal discomfort. The most advanced technology in aerosolizing equipment is provided, along with custom compounded medications. The Sinus Dynamics nebulizer produces an ultra-consistent particle-size mist. This can be ideal for the maximum distribution of medication in the nasal cavity and sinuses. Aside from the ease of usage and portability, the equipment is also lightweight and silent.
