The nasal cavity is also known as nasal fossa and is located behind the nose in the middle of the face and is a large air filled space. The nasal passages depend on moisture to remove phlegm or mucus that get stuck in the passages without sufficient moisture. The nose provides warmth and humidity to help air pass but with homes and workplaces often “over dry” environments the lack of moisture can aggravate allergies and sinusitis. Sinusitis develops under many conditions and develops in the nasal cavity. Sinusitis is inflammation of the nasal passages due to a blockage or bacteria. The sinusitis infection develops when bacteria and mucus get trapped in the sinus cavity when the sinus cavity opening is swollen shut. Sinusitis is distinguished by inflammation that comes from pathogens or bacteria attacking the already swollen cavity lining, causing more inflammation. There are many ways to provide treatment to the nasal or nasal cavities during a sinus infection, cold, or an allergy. Sinus irrigators are used by proactive individuals who chose to clean out their sinuses for optimum sinus and general respiratory health. The purpose of a sinus irrigator is to clean out his or her sinus cavities and nasal passages as well as prevent the development of an infection. For individuals who already have a sinus problem or allergies, a sinus irrigator can help improve a preexisting condition by clearing out nasal congestion, post nasal drip and other allergens with water and saline solutions. · Sinus irrigation is a very effective way of taking care of your sinus passages and nasal area. One of the goals of the sinus irrigation process is to flush out unwanted elements in your nose and sinuses. These unwanted elements may be allergens, dust particles, pollen, excess mucus, bacteria or fungi. Another goal of sinus irrigation is to retain and restore the natural movement of the cilia. The cilia are the hairs found in the mucus membranes of the nasal passages, needed to protect the nasal area from infection. A Saline Rinse A saline nasal spray can be helpful in reducing respiratory dryness and nasal congestion and has the advantage of portability during a sinusitis infection. A nasal spray is a treatment method that is widely utilized for sinusitis infections and can provide some sinus relief. Nasal sprays are obtained over the counter or prescribed by a physician but due to the design of the nasal spray bottle, a nasal spray emits a large particle size that cannot fit into the tiny sinus openings. The large particle cannot reach the inflamed openings of the sinus cavities nor remove the pathogens caught inside the upper sinus cavities. Nasal sprays only treat the lower nasal passages and remove pathogens in the lower sinus regions unless there has been a previous functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Concentrations of saline solution vary depending on the intended use. Medical use of saline solutions are common as saline solutions are essential for normal body functions and are used to replace or treat dehydration. Saline nasal sprays are commonly utilized to provide moisture to dry and irritated sinus and nasal passages. They function to remove pollen, dust, and other irritants that are airborne and can provide allergy and sinus relief. Nose Rinse A nose rinse is a typical sinus irrigator usually purchased that can be bought at drug store. A nose rinse simply provides a liquid mixture that usually contains saline (salt water) to be squirted into the nasal passage and gently blown out of the nose with the aid of running water and / or a wash cloth. Another method of nasal irrigation is the “neti pot”, probably the oldest known nasal irrigator and used for centuries in India. · A neti-pot is a nasal irrigator that looks like a small teapot-like container which holds the water and an added salt mixture. The person seeking to irrigate their nasal passages with a neti pot pours the salt water mixture into one nostril, while leaning over a bathroom sink, and waits until the salt water mixture flows out of the other nasal passage. A person choosing to use a neti-pot can also use plain water. Nasal Spray Decongestants Nasal spray decongestants and oral decongestants are also used during a sinusitis infection and function by shrinking swollen mucous membranes that are in the nasal passageways and sinus cavity openings. The purpose of a decongestant is to allow for easy breathing during a sinus infection, unblocking the airways. Oral decongestant may be recommended but like oral antibiotics they also rely on the blood vessels in the sinus cavity to deliver medication through the blood stream to the infected sinus area. Effective relief is not provided by utilizing the limited supply of blood vessels in the nasal cavity. In addition, a decongestant can also assist in shortening the course of the illness by shrinking the ostia, allowing the mucus to drain from the sinus cavity. Spray decongestants also are available and provide immediate relief, but due to the active ingredient oxymetazoline or phenylephrine can become habit forming as well as inducing a rebound effect. If spray decongestants are used for too long and the medication wears off, the swelling in the nasal cavity returns and is more severe than it was prior to the last application of decongestant. Hence, a dependency on nasal sprays can easily develop which may require steroids to assist with the withdrawal period as well as reducing inflammation. The rebound effect from a decongestant spray can occur for anyone using a decongestant spray from a bad cold to an acute sinusitis infection. Nasal Irrigators There are also nasal irrigator devices available which are motorized, both electric and battery operated. Motorized nasal irrigators offer a pulsating irrigation, a more direct way of rinsing the nasal passages. The pressure and flow of the rinsing mixture can be specified and controlled for your preference and need. Using motorized nasal irrigators offer a more thorough and customized rinsing with the pulsating solution being sent deeper into the nasal passages. Nasal spray steroids are nasal sprays that are hand pumped sprays that instill a fine mist into the nostril and reduce inflammation in the sinus and nasal passageways. Steroids or corticosteroids are organic or synthetic fat soluble compounds that provide important physiological actions and are any of the steroid hormones made by the cortex of the adrenal gland. Steroid nasal sprays are recommended to reduce inflammation that develop during a sinusitis infection and prevent histamine production. By disrupting histamine, the nasal steroid can also block allergic reactions that often trigger sinusitis and can prevent other symptoms that can accompany a sinusitis infection. Histamines are nitrogen compounds that are produced as a regulating physiologic response triggering an inflammatory response to foreign pathogens. Histamine causes nasal mucus production as it increases vascular permeability, resulting in fluid escaping from the capillaries into the tissues. Nasal Steroids Nasal steroids are often the last step for sinusitis patients whose symptoms did not respond to the standard protocol of treatment and over the counter medications. A steroid will help with swelling in nasal membranes, nasal secretions, shrink nasal polyps, and provide an improvement in breathing due to the airways being opened up. A nebulizer can also act as an effective sinus irrigator. The Nebulizer provided by Sinus Dynamic helps clear out sinus infection and gently forces unwanted particles out of the nasal passages. The inhaled medicated mist reduces inflammation and loosens impacted debris. The Sinus Dynamics Nebulizer irrigates your nasal passages gently and effectively. In addition, Sinus Dynamics provides the antibiotics, antifungals and anti inflammatories needed to treat the vast array of sinus conditions.
