Sinusitis Natural Remedy

Those seeking a sinusitis natural remedy will experience some symptom relief, however effectiveness of natural remedies varies greatly.  Any treatment which results in sinus drainage and reduces inflammation will produce symptom relief as well as alleviate the blockage and severe congestion.  Herbs, minerals, plant extracts are used throughout the world, yet there is little evidence available regarding natural remedies total benefit.  A sinusitis infection is characterized by inflammation of the sinuses caused by a blockage in the sinus cavity that stem from the presence of foreign debris in the sinus passages.

  •          A sinusitis infection is a blockage which causes inflammation or swelling of the lining in the sinus passages and cavities.  The blockage of foreign debris of bacteria, fungi or virus also triggers excess mucus production in the sinus cavities and inflammation due to the pathogens attacking the sinus cavity openings.  Sinusitis can be classified as acute lasting less than four weeks, sub-acute lasting four to eight weeks, or chronic with a duration of  eight weeks or more with additional symptoms that develop such as fatigue, dental pain, loss of smell and loss of taste.

The treatment options

The treatment options available for a sinusitis natural remedy include herbal and natural decongestants, antihistamines, natural expectorants, salt water nasal sprays, vaporizers and humidifiers as well as drinking plenty of fluids, and rest.  Decongestants are popular home remedies and function by shrinking swollen mucous membranes that are in the nasal passageways and sinus cavity openings and provide symptom relief.

  •          The purpose of a decongestant is to allow for easy breathing during a sinus infection, unblocking the airways.  Spray decongestants are available and provide immediate relief. A steam bath is a very natural and accessible remedy for decongestion especially when using tea tree and lavender oil.  Tea tree oil is a natural antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and is recognized for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, disinfectant qualities.  It is used for congestion, bronchitis, asthma, and ear infections.  Lavender is also used for respiratory benefits with colds, cough, sinus infection used in the bath or as a vapor as well as alleviating sore muscles, sprains, and tense muscles.

Antihistamines are available as a natural remedy and help clear up excess mucus from allergic reactions that often trigger sinusitis infection.  Effectiveness of natural antihistamines vary greatly as do agreement on dosage.

  •          Taken as an herbal tea or herbal extract, basil, chamomile, fennel, reishi, and thyme are believed to assist with histamine blockage or reduction.  Antihistamines block histamines which are helpful in clearing up excess mucus from allergic reactions that often trigger sinusitis and can clear the headache that can accompany a sinusitis infection.  Histamines are nitrogen compounds that are produced as a regulating physiologic response triggering an inflammatory response to foreign pathogens.

If antihistamines fail to provide adequate pain relief an analgesic can be taken and are mild anti-inflammatories that are often taken in combination with antibiotics, decongestants and antihistamines to provide symptom relief for sinusitis.

  •          Natural analgesics include dandelion root that is taken as a pill, liquid tincture, or spray as well as Devil’s claw, Willow, Cayenne, and Camphor and Echinacea.

An expectorant which is used to thin mucus is beneficial for those in need of removing phlegm from the sinus or respiratory airways during an acute sinusitis infection or acute respiratory tract infection.  An expectorant helps bring up trapped mucus and other material from the bronchi, trachea, and lungs.  Natural expectorants include thyme, Elecampagne which is an herb that is grown and garnished with honey and lemon.  Any expectorant acts by breaking down the viscosity of the mucus and body secretions and is also used in natural cough medicine, dissolves thick mucus and reduces respiratory difficulties.

Inhaling hot steam or vapor will help moisten the mucus in the sinus cavity.  Though the hot steam may offer some relief, this home remedy will not cure the sinusitis and they symptoms will return.  Steam and humidity assist with drainage in thinning out the thick mucus trapped in the sinus and respiratory tract. The home remedy of putting a hot compress on the area that is inflamed will also only offer temporary relief since heat itself will not kill bacteria.

There are also many home remedies that involve herbs and oils which are applied or boiled to alleviate the sinusitis symptoms. Camphor and eucalyptus can be added to the water to assist with respiratory functioning.  Eucalyptus is an anti-microbial that can also be gargled in small doses and is considered a potent antiseptic. Camphor oil is used widely in vapor therapy and is a natural anti inflammatory, analgesic and antiseptic has been also used as a topical ointment that is massaged onto the chest due to its ability to open up chest congestion.

  •          Oral antibiotics are the main method used to treat sinusitis.

However, if a person is trying to avoid oral antibiotics there are home remedies made from apple cider vinegar and garlic to fight colds and flus.  Apple cider vinegar is known to have antibacterial and antiseptic properties and when it is combined with garlic which has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-parasitic properties creates a healthful tincture.    Garlic is known for its medicinal benefits as an antibacterial and an anti-fungal as are Echinacea and Elderberry.  Echinacea, is used for infections and enhancing the immune system, and is recognized for its strong antibacterial properties.  Echinacea is taken oral , liquid, or lozenge form and has little side effects typically.  However, allergic reactions can cause hives, skin rash, shortness of breath or tongue or nasal swelling.  Echinacea is not FDA approved but is taken for sinusitis infections.  Goldenseal is referred to as “nature’s antibiotic” sold in pill and liquid form and used by the Cherokee Indians for skin diseases and wounds.  Goldenseal is also recognized for it is natural anti-inflammatory properties.  Goldenseal is contraindicated for those who suffer with high blood pressure, glaucoma, heart disease or diabetes as allergic reactions can occur and Goldenseal is not FDA regulated.  Patients who suffer any of the following side effects from Goldenseal should call 911: throat swelling, difficulty breathing, dizziness or hives.  Bromelain is an herb thought to be a naturally occurring antibiotic and anti-inflammatory in pineapples.  Bromelain is taken to reduce nasal infection.

  •          There are many herbs taken to ward off colds and flus but the true benefits generate debate at this time and are undecided.  However, oral tinctures, like oral antibiotics unfortunately rely on the blood stream and blood vessels exclusively to carry medication to the infected sinus cavity.  Relying on the sinus cavities to provide the medicinal benefit from the herbs and medication through the limited supply of blood vessels in the sinus cavity is problematic as the blood vessels cannot deliver an effective dose of medication to the actual site of infection.  Recurrent sinusitis infections are common with the use of oral antibiotics due to the scant amount of blood vessels that are thus unable to deliver an effective dose to the site of infection.  In short, it is difficult to effectively treat any sinusitis infection with oral antibiotics.

When physicians have failed in eradicating the sinusitis infection, sinus surgery will often be recommended.  Sinus surgery is painful and only clears out a portion of the sinus infection.  Statistically, patients who have had previous sinus surgeries typically require future sinus surgeries.

A topical treatment: nebulized compounded medications

Sinus Dynamics is not a natural remedy yet it is the most innovative treatment for sinusitis infection currently on the market with custom compounded antibiotics, anti-fungals, and anti-inflammatories that are delivered directly into the sinus cavities with a state of the art nebulizer that produces a pressurized aerosolized mist.  Sinus Dynamics nebulizer emits a fine medicated mist with 3.2-micron particle size that can rapidly enter the inflamed sinus cavities, depositing medication and making contact with the infection directly. The aerosolized medicated mist is sent up into nasal passages reaching the actual site of the sinusitis infection, fighting the infection on contact.  Sinus Dynamics’ topical approach to treating sinusitis is particularly effective as medications that are topically applied result in little to no side effects and ensure a low systemic absorption rate as well as reaching the site of infection unlike the other treatment methods prescribed.  A sinusitis natural remedy can be helpful: Sinus Dynamics sinus therapy is effective! Sinus Dynamics approach does work!  Try a treatment that has 98% success rate in the treatment of patients who are suffering with sinusitis.  Call us (877) 447-4276today to find out how we can treat your sinusitis infection quickly and easily!
