Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Overuse of Antibiotics with Sinusitis

Sinusitis is often caused by an infection in the nasal or sinus passages. Most infections start with a virus and get better within a week. Some people develop a secondary bacterial infection. For instance, after a week of persistent symptoms, most people develop a bacterial infection. Antibiotics are commonly prescribed for sinusitis caused by bacterial infections.

But there is a common misconception that all sinus infections should be treated with antibiotics. This causes many patients to demand the medication for treating their respective cases of sinusitis. With this, there have been more and more cases of overuse of antibiotics with sinusitis. Often, the cause of a sinus infection is only viral and not bacterial, and this renders antibiotics useless against the infection. Again, it should be emphasized that antibiotics are only used to treat bacterial infection.

Most sinusitis symptoms resolve on their own in three to seven days. However, if you do not feel any improvements in your condition after seven days of persistent symptoms, it is best to see your doctor and find out if you can be treated with antibiotics.

Bacterial infections are diagnosed clinically. Once diagnosed, your doctor can prescribe you with antibiotics. Usually, your treatment is started off with a broad-spectrum antibiotic. These antibiotics target a wide range of bacteria. But they are not always highly effective because there is a big risk of bacteria developing immunity against the antibiotics. Narrow spectrum antibiotics are proven more effective because they target specific bacteria. But before using narrow spectrum antibiotics, a culture is done in a lab to determine the bacterium causing your infection.

If after two rounds of different antibiotics, there is still no improvement, stop taking antibiotics. Further testing and consultation may be needed to determine the proper treatment options for your sinusitis.

Limit antibiotic use to strict evidence-based guidelines. This prevents overuse of antibiotics, reduces medical expenses and minimizes unnecessary side effects. It also reduces risk of bacteria developing a resistance to antibiotics.

A nebulized treatment program is offered at Sinus Dynamics. With state of the art aerosolized technology, a specficially designed compound solution or medication can be prepared for you. An easy to use nebulizer is the tool that carries your medication. With this, you get the right amount of medication as you need it, providing fast relief from your sinusitis.
