Sinusitis Severe Infection
|
Sinus infections have the potential to be dangerous due to the location of vital organs like the brain as well as the ears. Those with immune disorders, genetic disorders, and exposure to harmful pathogens such as MRSA, virulent fungus, or dangerous viruses are at risk. Sinusitis is a condition characterized by inflammation in the sinus area caused by a blockage or bacteria in the sinus cavity. Sinusitis takes place during the course of a cold or an allergy when the sinus cavity opening becomes swollen shut as a result of inflammation from bacteria attacking the sinus cavity opening. When bacteria enters the sinus cavity and attacks the sinus opening, it results in the sinus cavity becoming swollen shut. Pressure builds in the sinus cavity when the sinus cavity is filled with mucus and bacteria. The trapped bacteria and mucus multiply inside the blocked sinus cavity. When the sinus cavity is blocked by inflammation the trapped mucus cannot be removed by the cilia. The cilia are small hairs in the nasal passage which exist to remove pathogens from the sinus area.
Treatment for severe sinusitis Although an oral antibiotic is commonly prescribed to treat sinusitis, during the course of a severe infection it is possible that IV antibiotics will be called upon. In addition, a physician may also prescribe oral steroids to assist with inflammation. Oral medications used to treat sinus infections are a very limited treatment. Those with severe infection could be compromised by a systemic antibiotic when dealing with exposure, to MRSA, for example. Why oral antibiotics may not work – on severe sinusitis: Oral antibiotics work by traveling through the blood stream via the blood vessels to the infected area. The sinus area is unique in that it has very few blood vessels which results in oral medication failing to provide an effective amount of medication to the infected area. Those suffering with sinusitis are often encouraged to utilize prescribed or over the counter nasal sprays. Nasal sprays provide some relief to the lower sinus cavity. However, the particle size droplet emitted from the nasal spray is large and cannot pass through the inflamed sinus cavity opening. The nasal spray cannot reach the upper sinus area and remove debris or administer medication where the infection lies. Overuse of nasal spray is problematic and can result in an increase in inflammation in the sinus area. The following are severe sinusitis conditions:
A better treatment for some patients would likely prevent further complications. This is the danger of using oral antibiotics that fail to treat sinusitis and result later in life threatening conditions due to exposure to dangerous pathogens or conditions. Using an effective treatment may prevent serious complications down the road: Topical Treatments for Sinusitis There currently is only one way to receive a topical treatment, which simply means direct deposition of medication into the sinus area.
