Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sick Sinusitis Syndrome

 

Sinusitis is caused by a blockage in the sinus cavity.  When the bacteria gets trapped in the sinus cavity, it attacks the cavity lining and the infection begins. More swelling and irritation occur than the typical amount of inflammation that a patient may experience with a cold or with allergies, which makes the blockage that traps the bacteria and mucus.  Sick sinus syndrome is a disturbance of the normal rhythm of the heart. This is also related to sinus bradycardia, a condition where the sinus node is not functioning how it should. A sinus node is a collection of cells in the upper right chamber of the heart, that generates electrical signals.  

 

Sick sinus syndrome treatment requires a pacemaker to insure that heart functions correctly.  Sinusitis has many treatment forms.  Oral antibiotics is one common treatment.  Antibiotics work against infection when they travel through out the bodys blood stream to fight against the bacteria that is causing the infection.  In the sinus cavity however, there are not very many blood vessels around the sinuses and therefore the antibiotic cannot fully fight the infection.  Another form of treatment for sinus infections is nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays clear up the inflammation in the lower nasal passage.  They can not, however, clear up the infection in the sinuses because of its large particle size.  Surgery is sometimes used when all other means of treatment have been used up.  With sinus surgery, only part of the inflammation and infection is cleaned out, and the infection often returns.
