Sinusitis: Signs & Symptoms of Infection

Sinusitis is the condition in which your nasal passages swell, effectively blocking the sinuses and preventing them from draining. This results in pressure and pain, and ultimately leads to an infection of the sinuses. Sinusitis is normally classified as either acute, or chronic. While acute sinusitis can be easy to treat with bed rest and over the counter medications, chronic sinusitis often requires rigorous use of antibiotics and, in severe cases, surgery.

Acute Sinusitis

Acute sinusitis is much easier to handle than chronic. Normally coming on a few days after you recover from a cold or the flu, acute sinusitis commonly lasts 7 to 10 days. Some of the symptoms include:

  •           Stuffy nose
  •           Headache
  •           Sneezing and/or coughing
  •           Postnasal drip
  •           Thick greenish/yellow discharge

Chronic Sinusitis

If you have been diagnosed with acute sinusitis, but it persists longer than a few weeks, chances are that you could have chronic sinusitis. A chronic sinus infection lasts much longer than an acute, often up towards 12 weeks or longer, and while it’s symptoms are similar, they can be much more severe.  Symptoms of chronic sinusitis include:

  •           Extreme pressure/congestion
  •           Headaches that get worse when leaning forward
  •           Halitosis
  •           Pain in the teeth and jaw
  •           Postnasal drip
  •           Clear, thin discharge

When to seek treatment

It is important to seek proper treatment, no matter how severe your infection is. Leaving an acute sinus infection untreated could lead to chronic sinusitis. If you think that you may have chronic sinusitis, it is extremely important that you seek help from your doctor immediately, as the infection can spread to other parts of the body.
