Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sinus Allergies

Sinus allergies are caused by several airborne substances that we inhale through our nose and mouth. Pollen, for example, a small particle released by flowering plants, goes through our nose as we breathe, possibly irritating the sinuses and leading to sinus allergies. Pollen causes mucus to accumulate because mucus has to work extra hard to keep pollen out. Pollen prevents the accumulation of mucus to drain out of the nose properly, and this creates the ideal condition for viruses and bacteria to develop. It is possible this way for sinus allergies to lead to sinus infection.

Other allergens (apart from pollen) that may cause sinus allergies include dirt, pollution, animal hair, food particles, molds, dead insect remains and wastes, etc. Most sinus allergies occur in the seasons of spring and early fall. During these seasons, the air is dry and moisture-free. Dry air makes it easier for allergens such as pollen and ragweed to flow in the air.

Some symptoms of sinus allergies are common: runny nose, sneezing, itching nose, watery eyes, sore throat, excess coughing, etc. The symptoms can be treated with non prescription oral medication, which can be easily purchased at drug stores or grocery stores. An example of these types of medicines is antihistamine.

Another way to treat sinus allergies would be to use a nasal spray, or a nebulizer. Sinus Dynamics manufactures an aerosolizing device or nebulizer that was developed using the most advanced in medical technology. The device quickly and effectively sprays a fine mist of medication into your sinuses, targeting the affected areas. There are little to no side effects with using the Sinus Dynamics nebulizer. It is convenient and portable, and treatment takes only up to five minutes.

It is important to attempt to treat the symptoms of sinus allergy at its first occurrences. Neglecting to cure the problems while they are manageable may lead to the growth of the symptoms into more serious problems. Sinus allergy, remember, may lead to sinus infection. Sinus infection, if left alone to grow into a more serious condition, may need to be treated with sinus surgery. So it would be wise to treat your sinus allergy as soon as possible.
