Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sinus Antibiotic

Since the discovery of sinus problems, there has been a lot of research and findings for its cure. Many stick to at-home remedies while some who are seeking fast relief resort to doctor-prescribed antibiotics.

There are two groupings of antibiotics; narrow-spectrum and broad-spectrum antibiotics. The first one consists of drugs that work against only a few types of bacteria, while the latter includes drugs that attack a wide range of bacteria. The broad-spectrum antibiotics are generally more effective, but are more likely to promote antibiotic resistance. For that reason, your doctor will most likely prescribe narrow-spectrum antibiotics, which often costs less. Doctors may recommend broad-spectrum antibiotics for infections that do not respond to treatment with narrow-spectrum drugs.

A sinus antibiotic will be most effective if the right dosage is prescribed to the exact bacteria growing in your sinuses. Doctors identify the bacteria by swabbing a nasal discharge and growing it into a bacterial culture laboratory. This way, antibiotics will be formulated based on your specific need.

Note that it is important to follow the doctor's instructions when using antibiotics even if you feel better before your treatment is completed.

Antibiotics may or may not be an effective treatment for sinusitis symptoms. The symptoms of bacterial sinusitis and a cold can be identical, but they are different from one another so they need to be treated differently.

Also, antibiotics, or anti-bacterial agents, are intended to kill bacteria. If sinus symptoms are caused by bacterial infection, then antibiotics can help. If symptoms are caused by a cold or similar respiratory ailment, antibiotics are useless, because a cold is viral.

The widespread use of antibiotics when they are not necessary has contributed to an increase in the number of antibiotic-resistant strains of many dangerous bacteria. Therefore, it is important that you and your doctor do not attempt to treat a viral cold with an antibiotic.
