Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinus Flush

 

More often than not, it is manageable to treat sinus infections. Through self-care measures and medical treatment, sinusitis is curable, without one having to experience any difficulty.

 

One may relieve the pain associated with this condition, like nasal congestion, severe headache, or facial pain or pressure, by opting to flush the sinus cavities with some saline solution. With this procedure, saline solution is administered through the nose with the help of a neti pot or a nose dropper, in order to clean the nasal cavities of mucus.

 

Mucus is naturally secreted by our bodies as a defense system in the sinuses. It absorbs pollutants and entraps bacteria, and then the mucus drains down into the nasal passage. The moment that the normal functioning of that defense system is interrupted (for example, the mucus is no longer fluid but already crusted and is causing nasal blockage), the sinuses get inflamed and infected, and sinusitis sets in.

 

Because the sinus flush method is a measure to help reduce congestion in the sinuses, some people make this a part of their daily routine to prevent the sinus congestion into leading to sinusitis.

 

There are some cases in which treatment of sinusitis through medications is not effective, or sinus infections become coupled with complications, examples of which are structural abnormalities or fungal sinusitis. The basic surgical procedure is to insert a drainage tube in the nasal cavities and then to put in some sterile water to wash them out thoroughly.
