Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sinus Obstruction

Any kind of irregular obstruction in the sinus areas can cause discomfort and several corresponding sinus troubles. Sinus obstruction results to nasal congestion first and foremost.  This can be brought about by a lot of different things.

The bones and cell linings surrounding the sinus cavities can have abnormalities that prevent the natural operations of the sinuses. For instance, if you have enlarged adenoids, nasal polyps, unusually-shaped turbinates, or a deviated septum, you might have problems like a stuffy nose, breathing difficulty, and entrapment of mucus in odd places in your sinus/nasal passages.

Obstructions brought into the sinuses through the nose include accumulated dust particles and allergens, plus infectious bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. These can physically block the nasal passages, cause larger amounts of mucus to be discharged, and/or trigger inflammation of the sinuses.

Overuse or improper use of medications can likewise cause you to have an obstructed sinus. You may be more harmed than cured of your sinus infection in this respect. Nasal sprays should only be used as directed, since abuse of medicated sprays can aggravate the sensitivities of your nose and sinus cavities, leading to swollen sinus tissues.

To determine the best course of action for removing a sinus obstruction, let your doctor recommend some tests for you such as a sinus x ray, endoscopy or CT scan. You may have to undergo surgery to correct bone and tissue abnormalities. Or you may just need to apply a corresponding treatment medication program to eliminate foreign objects in the sinuses.

One medicated program that you can ask your doctor about is the Sinus Dynamics program. This involves a consultation with a representative to assess your needs and to direct you to the program suited for you. You can ask to be referred to a local doctor, as needed. Medication is prepared by in-house pharmacists, an easy to use nebulizer is offered for patients who need it, insurance processing is guided by helpful associates, and constant follow ups are done with the patients. All of these are included in the program to ensure that your condition is given the attention it deserves.
