Sinus Polyp

A sinus polyp is a soft growth that develops on any of your sinuses, the lining of your nose. These are benign - in other words, they are non-cancerous growths. They vary in size, which determines what problems they may cause for you. Small sinus polyps may cause relatively few minor problems, but larger ones may keep you from breathing properly. They may also diminish your sense of smell, cause headaches, or result to snoring. In addition, massive sinus polyps can cause facial deformities.

Sinus polyps result from chronic inflammation of the sinuses. What triggers the inflammation of the lining of the nose (or sinuses), however, is not always clear. Inflammation may have resulted from viral or bacterial infections, from allergies or from an immune system response to fungus. Chronic inflammation causes the blood vessels in the sinuses to allow water to accumulate in the cells. Over time, gravity pulls on these water-filled tissues, thus they develop into sinus polyps.
