Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain

The sinus and nasal areas of a human person has several parts that make up the system which allows us to breathe properly. A sinus turbinate is one of these essential parts. There are three of these bone structures - the inferior, middle and superior turbinates.

 

The main function of a turbinate is to condition the air that comes into the nasal areas so that it becomes acceptable to the passageways and the lungs. Cilia, the small hairs in the nasal areas, contribute to the turbinate's goal of filtering the air and making sure that no unwanted particles get into the deeper and more sensitive parts of the respiratory system. Mucus and enzymes are also found in each turbinate. These assist in providing moisture that promotes good health, as well as protection from infection and other invasive particles.

 

When one or more of the turbinates malfunction, it can mean a lot of things. A sinus infection, allergy attack and rhinitis are only a few of the potential culprits. An abnormally shaped turbinate can also cause interference in the normal performance of the said turbinate, and its surrounding sinus and nasal areas. Polyps, which are irregular growths of mucous membrane tissues, can also affect the turbinates negatively.
