Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sinus Washes

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucosa (delicate lining of the inner body surfaces) of various sinuses, which are located around the nasal passages. Usual symptoms include increased nasal secretions and pain or headache around the sinuses.

Symptoms related to sinusitis include blockage of the ostium (openings of the sinuses), nasal congestion, runny or stuffy nose, white or yellow discharge, headache, coughs, persistent fatigue and fever.

Some amount of mucous production from the nasal and sinus lining is normal. Allergies and infections will cause excessive mucous production. This creates some of the nasal and sinus symptoms such as stuffy or runny nose or post nasal drip. One way of relieving these symptoms is through sinus washes or rinses. When the sinus rinse is performed, you wash away excess mucous and allergens such as pollen, dust particles, pollutants and bacteria, thus reducing inflammation of the mucous membrane. Normal mucosa will fight infections and allergies better and symptoms will be reduced or even cured.

For sinus washes, you will need a large volume of saline of at least 2 oz. to 4 oz. in each nasal passage, delivered with low pressure. When you squeeze the solution up into your nose, the flow should continue upwards, go over the septum and flow through your other nostril. This ensures that all allergens, mucous and other materials in the path of the flow are removed from the nasal passages. Until this flow cycle occurs, you will not achieve a thorough cleansing job.

A large volume of saline solution creates a momentum that sweeps away all allergens, excess mucous, pollutants, house dust and animal dander in the path of the flow. This flow exits out of the nose through the other nostril. Since you are removing mucous, allergens and debris from delicate internal tissue of the nose, a low pressure will ensure that no irritation is caused, especially when inflammation is present in the nasal passages.
