Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sinusitis 14 Day Antibiotics

Since sinusitis symptoms can be identical to symptoms of other related conditions like allergies and colds, it is important to see your doctor and get diagnosed before considering antibiotics as a treatment. Antibiotics are intended to kill bacteria. If your sinusitis symptoms are caused by bacterial infection, then antibiotics can help. If the symptoms are caused by a virus and other organisms aside from bacteria, then antibiotics may be useless.

Once diagnosed properly, your doctor can prescribe you a round of antibiotics to cure your bacterial infection. In most cases of antibiotics use, the medication is based most likely on the specific cause of infection. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are designed to treat multiple types of bacteria. This type of antibiotic is cheaper but you are more likely to develop bacterial antibiotic resistance as opposed to using narrow-spectrum antibiotics, which are designed to fight specific types of bacteria.

A round of antibiotics is taken anywhere from 7 to 14 days continuously. The medication is taken usually three times a day. Improvements from sinusitis should be felt within three days.  If after 14 days there is no improvement in your symptoms, see your doctor. The antibiotics given to you may not work well with your bacterial infection. And if you do feel better right away, do not stop taking antibiotics until your prescription is done. There is a big chance that the infection can return or worsen if antibiotics are taken improperly. For best results, follow your prescription exactly as directed. Do not miss a dose of your medication.

There are minimal side effects to antibiotics use. Prolonged antibiotics use is not recommended because of the chance of developing antibiotics resistance. If your symptoms do not improve after antibiotics use, consider another type of treatment for your sinusitis.
