Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Arrhythmia Infection



Sinusitis is an infection caused by bacteria in the sinus cavities.  When a person gets a cold or allergy, swelling occurs in the sinus cavity and its opening.  When bacteria get inside of the sinuses, they attack the cavity lining, which causes more inflammation, therefore trapping the bacteria and mucus inside, causing the sinusitis infection.  Symptoms of a sinusitis infection are congestion, facial pain, green nasal discharge, and cough.  Arrhythmia is a condition where the electrical activity of the heart is irregular.  Arrhythmia is related to sick sinus syndrome which is a condition in where the sinus node is not functioning as it should.  

There are many medications on the market along with pace makers and other electronic devices to treat sinus arrhythmia infection.  Sinusitis is also treated using different kinds of medications.  Antibiotics are frequently used to treat sinusitis infections.  Antibiotics work the in the body by traveling though the blood stream to the area of infection.  In the sinuses however, there are very few blood cells, so it is difficult for the amount of medication needed to reach the sinus cavities.  Nasal sprays are also often used.  Nasal sprays also cannot reach the area of infection due to their large particle size not being able to make it past the inflammation at the cavity opening.
