Sinusitis Home Remedy

There are various home remedies used to treat a sinusitis infection and experience symptom relief.  A sinusitis home remedy that results in sinus drainage will provide relief as well as minimize blockage and severe congestion.  There is little scientific proof available regarding home remedies and some are more commonly used than others.  First, recognizing the infection of sinusitis is essential before choosing a remedy.

·         Sinusitis is characterized as inflammation of the sinuses caused by a blockage in the sinus cavity that stem from the presence of foreign debris in the sinus passages.  A sinusitis infection is a blockage which causes inflammation or swelling of the lining in the sinus passages and cavities.  The blockage of foreign debris of bacteria, fungi or virus also triggers excess mucus production in the sinus cavities and inflammation due to the pathogens attacking the sinus cavity openings.  Sinusitis can be classified as acute lasting less than four weeks, sub-acute lasting 4–8 weeks, or chronic with a duration of 8 weeks or more with additional symptoms that develop such as fatigue, dental pain, loss of smell and loss of taste.

Blocked sinuses are very uncomfortable as pressure builds in the swollen sinus cavities.  Drainage is essential for symptom relief and is the act or process of drawing off fluids from a cavity or wound by means of suction or gravity.  Signs and symptoms of sinusitis infection are headache, postnasal drip, facial pain, pressure in the face that is dull or constant, cough, congestion, fever, and aching over the affected sinuses.  Sinus infections can cause inner ear problems as a result of the nasal passages being clogged.  Nasal inflammation can also cause dizziness, a vibrating sensation in the head as well as induce a migraine.  There are many conditions that contribute to the onset of a sinusitis infection such as the common cold, allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps as well as a deviated septum.  Sinusitis develops typically when there is existing inflammation from a cold or allergy.  When bacteria enter the sinus cavities, they attack the swelling of the cavity lining, causing more inflammation.  During a sinusitis infection, the cilia which are small hairs in the nasal passageways cannot perform their function of removing the debris that is blocked inside the sinus cavity.

The sinusitis home remedy treatment options available include:

  •          over the counter decongestants, antihistamines, expectorants,
  •          salt water washes
  •          nasal sprays
  •          vaporizers and humidifiers

Decongestants are popular home remedies and function by shrinking swollen mucous membranes that are in the nasal passageways and sinus cavity openings and provide symptom relief.  The purpose of a decongestant is to allow for easy breathing during a sinus infection, unblocking the airways.  Spray decongestants also are available and provide immediate relief, but due to the active ingredient oxymetazoline or phenylephrine can become habit forming as well as inducing a rebound effect.  If spray decongestants are used for too long and the medication wears off, the swelling in the nasal cavity returns and is more severe than it was prior to the last application of decongestant.  Hence, a dependency on nasal sprays can easily develop which may require steroids to assist with the withdrawal period as well as reducing inflammation.

Antihistamines are also used frequently as a home remedy and they help clear up excess mucus from allergic reactions that often trigger sinusitis infection such as Benadryl, Claritin or Sudafed.  Antihistamines block histamines which are helpful in clearing up excess mucus from allergic reactions that often trigger sinusitis and can clear the headache that can accompany a sinusitis infection.  Histamines are nitrogen compounds that are produced as a regulating physiologic response triggering an inflammatory response to foreign pathogens.  Histamine causes nasal mucus production as it increases vascular permeability, resulting in fluid escaping from the capillaries into the tissues.  Antihistamines are “any drug that neutralize the effects of histamine, used especially in the treatment of allergies.”

If antihistamines fail to provide adequate pain relief an analgesic can be recommended such as Alieve or Advil.  Analgesics typically are mild over the counter anti-inflammatories that are often taken in combination with antibiotics, decongestants and antihistamines to provide symptom relief for sinusitis.

·         An expectorant which often contains an active agent like Guaifensin in medications is used to thin mucus and is beneficial for those in need of removing phlegm from the sinus or respiratory airways during an acute sinusitis infection or acute respiratory tract infection.  An expectorant helps bring up trapped mucus and other material from the bronchi, trachea, and lungs.  Over the counter expectorants like Mucinex, or robitussin cough medicine can help dissolve thick mucus and reduce respiratory difficulties.  Herbal expectorants are also available such as Elecampagne which is an herb that is grown and garnished with honey and lemon.  Any expectorant acts by breaking down the viscosity of the mucus and body secretions.

Nasal sprays – are commonly recommended sinusitis home remedy.  Nasal sprays assist with cleaning debris out of the sinus cavity and are typically prescribed or recommended in combination with other methods of sinusitis treatment.  There are also limitations in relying on nasal sprays to deliver medication to the upper sinus cavity.  Nasal sprays have difficulty getting medication and solution to the infection because the particle size is large and it cannot fit through the inflamed sinus opening which is very small.  Therefore, the size of the nasal spray droplet cannot reach the infection inside the sinus cavities.

Sinus irrigators - used to cleanse the sinuses for optimum sinus and respiratory health and assist with symptom reduction of sinus inflammation when a blockage is present in the sinus cavity. The purpose of a sinus irrigator is to clean out the sinus cavities and nasal passages as well as prevent the development of an infection.  For individuals who already have a sinus problem or allergies, a sinus irrigator can help improve a preexisting condition by clearing out nasal congestion, post nasal drip and other allergens with water and saline solutions.  Another ancient sinus irrigator is the “neti pot”, probably the oldest known nasal irrigator and used for centuries in India. A neti-pot is a nasal irrigator that looks like a small teapot-like container which holds the water and an added salt mixture.  The person seeking to irrigate their nasal passages to obtain relief of sinus congestion with a neti pot pours a salt water mixture into one nostril, while leaning over a bathroom sink, and waits until the salt water mixture flows out of the other nasal passage.  A person choosing to use a neti-pot can also use plain water.

Vaporizer’s steam as well as inhaling hot steam will help moisten the mucus in the sinus cavity.  Though the hot steam may offer some relief, this home remedy will not cure the sinusitis and they symptoms will return.  There are also many home remedies that involve herbs and oils which are applied or boiled to alleviate the sinusitis symptoms.

An oral antibiotic is the mainstay treatment used to treat sinusitis.  However, if a person is trying to avoid oral antibiotics there are home remedies made from apple cider vinegar and garlic to fight colds and flus.

·         Apple cider vinegar is known to have antibacterial and antiseptic properties and when it is combined with garlic which has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-parasitic properties creates a healthful tincture.    Garlic is known for its medicinal benefits as an antibacterial as are Echinacea and Elderberry.  Many herbs are taken to ward off colds and flus but the true benefits generate debate at this time and are undecided.

A nasal spray is a treatment method that is widely utilized for sinusitis infections and can provide some sinus relief.  Nasal sprays are obtained over the counter or prescribed by a physician but due to the design of the nasal spray bottle, a nasal spray emits a large particle size that cannot fit into the tiny sinus openings.

The new approach: Aerosol Treatment

A topical approach versus a systemic approach is offered by Sinus Dynamics.  Aerosol therapy is not a sinusitis home remedy yet it is the most innovative treatment for sinusitis infection currently on the market with custom compounded antibiotics, anti-fungals, and anti-inflammatories that are delivered directly into the sinus cavities with a state of the art nebulizer that produces a pressurized aerosolized mist.  Sinus Dynamics nebulizer emits a fine medicated mist with 3.2-micron particle size that can rapidly enter the inflamed sinus cavities, depositing medication and making contact with the infection directly. The aerosolized medicated mist is sent up into nasal passages reaching the actual site of the sinusitis infection, fighting the infection on contact.  Sinus Dynamics’ topical approach to treating sinusitis is particularly effective as medications that are topically applied result in little to no side effects and ensure a low systemic absorption rate as well as reaching the site of infection unlike the other treatment methods prescribed.  Sinus Dynamics sinus therapy is highly effective, easy to use, and safe with a 98% success rate in the treatment of patients who are suffering with sinusitis.  Contact Sinus Dynamics (877) 447-4276 today to discuss the treatment options available for your sinusitis infection.
