Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinus Infection Cold

  

            Sinus infections are caused by a blockage into the sinus cavities.  The blockage begins with the normal inflammation that goes along with a cold or allergies.  When bacteria get trapped in the sinus cavity, the bacteria attack the sinus cavity lining which results in more inflammation and infection.  Sinus infection symptoms are very similar to cold symptoms.  Some of the similar symptoms in sinus infections and colds are congestion, cough, and postnasal drip.  Often times with sinus infections, a patient will have headache, fever, and facial pain.  These symptoms usually do not happen with the common cold as they do with the flu.  Unlike sinus infections, the common cold usually only lasts for about one week.

 

            Often times, patients may use the same form of treatment to relieve symptoms in sinusitis as they do to treat the common cold.  There is no cure for the common cold but often times patients may use over the counter decongestants and cold medicines to relieve the symptoms until the cold goes away.  A common treatment for both sinus infections and colds is nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays will not cure a cold or sinus infections.  They are only meant for temporary relief of symptoms such as congestion and runny nose.  Nasal sprays are not effective in the treatment of sinus infections because their large particle size only reaches the lower nasal passage, and therefore cannot get into the sinus cavity where the inflammation lies.  Though many doctors prescribe antibiotics for sinus infections, which are ineffective due to the small amount of blood vessels in the sinus cavity, antibiotics will not work on the common cold because it is a virus.
