Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Infection Disease


A sinusitis infection is caused by a blockage in the sinus cavities.  This blockage occurs when swelling already exists from a cold or allergy usually.  When bacteria get into the sinus cavity, they attack this swelling of the lining, causing greater inflammation.  Bacteria and mucus can no longer be washed out by way of the cilia, since the opening to the sinus cavity is so inflamed, and the infection begins.  A disease may also increase the chances of sinusitis infection.  A few of the disease that causes the cilia to not work correctly are cystic fibrosis, kartagener's syndrome, and immotile cilia syndrome.  The many symtoms of sinusitis include congestion, cough, facial pain, headache, and green nasal discharge.

One common treatment for a sinusitis infection is nasal sprays.  The problem with nasal sprays however are that they are formulated with a large particle size that cannot make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity, and therefore cannot make it through into the infection.  Antibiotics and decongestants are also frequently used.  These medications work by traveling though the blood stream.  In the sinus cavities there are very few blood vessels, making it difficult for an efficent amount of medication to be delivered to the sinusitis infection.  A physician may also use sinus surgery as a last resort, once all other means of treatment have failed.  When a doctor performs sinus surgery, they remove only some of the inflammation and infection, which leaves a great chance of the infection returning.
