Sinusitis Infection and Bronchitis

A sinusitis defined as an inflammation or blockage of the paranasal passages.  The inflammation in the sinus cavity is usually due to a sinus infection caused by a blockage in the sinus cavities and the inflammation of the sinus cavity opening.  The opening of the sinus cavity is blocked and traps bacteria and mucus inside of the sinuses.  The blockage in the sinus cavity typically occurs when bacteria attack the already inflamed opening of the sinuses.  The cause of the sinus infection is typically caused by a cold or allergy.

Bronchitis is inflammation of the mucus membrane of the bronchi and characterized by a cough that occurs during the course of a cold or the flu.  Sinusitis develops as well during colds or the flu and allergies.  The bronchi are the airways that carry airflow to the lungs.  Bronchitis develops as a result of an upper respiratory tract infection that may or may not produce sputum.  The condition of Bronchitis and Sinusitis are somewhat similar in that both conditions are problematic as a result of inflammation that close off or obstruct openings in the body.

·         When a person has bronchitis with severe congestion it can cause inflammation of the bronchi, when there is swelling in the lining of the bronchial tubes.  Concurrently, a person can also experience severe swelling of the sinus cavity openings as a result of severe congestion and bacteria attacking the opening of the sinus cavity.  Similar symptoms between sinusitis infection and bronchitis are cough and mucus production.  A sinusitis infection has other symptoms such as congestion, facial pain, and green nasal discharge.  Bronchitis has added symptoms such as difficulty breathing and pain behind the breast bone.

Oral antibiotics are commonly prescribed to treat both sinusitis infection and bronchitis.  Oral Antibiotics work by traveling through the blood stream through the blood vessels to the area of infection.  In sinusitis infections there are very few blood vessels in the sinuses and therefore the antibiotic cannot fully work on the infection.  Nasal sprays are also frequently used in conjunction for the treatment of a sinusitis infection.  Nasal sprays have limitations in treating sinusitis and are unable to reach up into the upper sinus cavity due to the large particle size emitted from the nasal spray.  Therefore, the nasal spray has difficulty treating the actual infection of the sinusitis, the infected and inflamed opening of the sinus cavity.  Surgery is also an option for sinusitis infection patients.  Surgery is painful, and often times are just a temporary relief, since the doctor only removes part of the inflammation, and therefore the infection usually will return.
