Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Sinusitis Infection and Congestion Symptoms

 

Sinusitis Infections are an inflammation condition in the sinus cavity and its opening.  The sinusitis infection occurs when the swelling from a cold or allergy becomes attacked by bacteria, which causes greater inflammation.  When the opening to the sinus cavity becomes that inflamed, a blockage happens and bacteria and mucus become trapped, causing the infection.  There are many symptoms of a sinusitis infection such as headache, cough, green nasal discharge, and facial pain.  One major symptom is congestion.  Congestion occurs when the body is trying to free itself of a cold or of an infection.  In this case, the body is trying to get rid of the sinusitis infection.

 

Nasal sprays are used often as treatment for sinusitis infections and for congestion.  Nasal sprays, which can be prescribed or purchased over the counter, are meant to work by stopping the inflammation in the sinus cavities.  Unfortunately, the particle size of the nasal spray medications is too large and can only offer relief to the lower part of the sinuses.  Nasal sprays cannot make it past the inflammation at the opening to the nasal cavities to get to the infection.  Antibiotics are also used to fight sinusitis infections and its symptoms.  Antibiotics work to fight infections by traveling through the blood stream to the infected area.  In the sinus cavities however, there are very few blood vessels, so the full amount of medication needed cannot effectively be distributed.
