Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

            Sinusitis infections begin when a person has existing swelling of the sinus cavities which becomes attacked by bacteria, and as a result greater inflammation occurs causing bacteria and mucus to become trapped.  When this amount of inflammation occurs, the cilia can no longer flush out the trapped bacteria and mucus, and the sinusitis infection begins.  There are many symptoms of sinusitis which may include cough, congestion, green nasal discharge, postnasal drip, and facial pain and pressure.  When the infection last for twelve or more weeks it is considered chronic and may have added symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell and the person can become fatigued.

 

            There are many treatments for sinusitis infections.  Often a person will use over the counter or prescribed nasal sprays.  Nasal sprays cannot cure the sinusitis infection due to the fact that their particle size is too large to make it through the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection though it may offer some relief to the lower part of the sinuses.  Oral antibiotics are also often prescribed.  Oral antibiotics work by traveling though the blood stream to the area of infection.  In the sinus cavities though, there are very few blood vessels so it is not easy for an effective amount of medication to be delivered to the sinusitis infections.
