Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Infections


Sinusitis infections are an inflammation infection on the nasal cavity lining.   Sinusitis infections start when the normal swelling in the sinus cavity lining caused by a cold or allergies, gets attacked by bacteria and becomes more inflamed since the bacteria and mucus can not drain by way of the cilia.  The symptoms of sinusitis infections are congestion, postnasal drip, headache, facial pain, and green nasal discharge.   When sinusitis infections last more than twelve weeks, it is considered chronic.  The same symptoms can continue and patients may become fatigued and have a loss of sense of smell and taste.  Some medications may also cause sinus infections, such as aspirin and topical nasal decongestants.  

Sinusitis infections have many varied forms of treatment.  One of the most common treatments is oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on infections when they enter the blood stream and travel through it to the area of infection.  Oral antibiotics work on many infections, but in the sinuses, there are a small amount of blood vessels so it is difficult for an effective amount of medication to be distributed into the sinusitis infection.  Nasal sprays are often used and can be prescribed of purchased over the counter.  Nasal sprays do not always work effectively due to their large particle size.  It is difficult for the large particles to travel past the sinus cavity opening because of the inflammation.
