Sinusitis Mask

Sinusitis, also known as a sinus infection, is inflammation of the sinuses caused by a blockage in the sinus cavity that stem from the presence of foreign debris in the sinus passages.  When the blood vessels in your nose dilate it fills the nasal and sinus cavity with blood and fluid which results in swollen membranes and congestion.  Sinusitis can be an allergic or non-allergic reaction and is defined as “inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages.  Sinus infections can cause headache or pressure in the eyes, nose, cheek area, or on one side of the head. A person with a sinus infection may also have a cough, a fever, bad breath, and nasal congestion with thick nasal secretions.  Sinusitis is categorized as acute (sudden onset) or chronic (long term, the most common type).”  In addition, those affected with a sinusitis infection sometimes report an increased sensitivity or headache when they lean forward.  Other less typical symptoms include pain and pressure in the ears, fatigue as well as dental pain.  Signs and symptoms of sinusitis include itchy nose, eyes, throat, stuffy nose, postnasal drip, possible fever and fatigue.  The causes of sinus infections vary but the most common causes include: weather changes, infections, food and medications, environmental or occupations irritants, hormone changes and stress.  Obviously, a conscientious approach to your health would include increased awareness about the triggers of sinusitis to prevent sinus infections.

Methods

There are many treatment methods over the counter and by prescription to treat sinusitis.  There are also tried and true methods that can be effective such as inhaling hot steam.  Steam inhalers are available at local drug stores and are reasonably priced.

  •          Any steam is beneficial in keeping the nasal passages moist however, and assist with mucus drainage.  Steam inhalers, vaporizers, and humidifiers function to moisten the air and are available at most drug stores and drug companies.  These products are also referred to as a sinusitis mask, as some of them come with an attachment to place over the face.
  •           Moist air assists with the removal of allergens and mucus trapped in the sinus passages.  Inhaling hot steam which can also be done in the shower or bath and can provide symptom relief with breathing and make a big difference at night when congestion typically is worse.
  •          Vaporizers are known to provide an attachment for a sinusitis mask, much like a CPAP mask.  Vaporizers can provide comfort during a sinus infection but it must be close by the patient for actual benefit.
  •          An indoor environment that is not too humid or dry is the optimum environment for those suffering with sinusitis.  Those utilizing devices that emit steam are warned not to breathe the steam but the mist to avoid getting burned.  Although steam and mist are helpful in alleviating symptoms of sinusitis, they cannot treat the actual infection.  There are many treatment options available for a sinusitis infection.  The most common treatment methods include over the counter decongestants, antihistamines, expectorants, nasal sprays and oral antibiotics.
  •      an oral antibiotic to treat sinusitis - marginally effective and rely on the blood stream and blood vessels exclusively to carry medication to the infected sinus cavity
  •     Recurrent sinusitis infections are common with the use of oral antibiotics due to the scant amount of blood vessels that are thus unable to deliver an effective dose to the site of infection.  The sinus cavities blood vessels which are swollen and infected providing all the treatment to the sinusitis infection results in an ineffective method for treating this area of the body.   In short, it is difficult to effectively treat any sinusitis infection with oral antibiotics.
