Sinusitis Polyp Infection
|
Nasal Polyps & Sinusitis A sinusitis infection is a condition that is characterized by inflammation of the sinus area resulting in bacteria and mucus getting trapped inside the sinus cavities. A sinusitis infection typically develops when existing inflammation usually caused by a cold or an allergy is exacerbated by bacteria that attack the already inflamed sinus cavity opening. When bacteria enter into the sinus cavities and attack the already swollen cavity opening, sinusitis has developed. Chronic inflammation is a contributing factor in the development of nasal polyps as well. What is a sinusitis polyp infection? Nasal polyps are small growths inside the nasal passage that occur typically when the mucosa is chronically inflamed can create a sinusitis polyp infection. Nasal polyps can range in size from the size of a grape to a pea and are attached to stalks in the sinus walls. As polyps continue to grow they can obstruct the nasal airway causing congestion and interfere with sense of smell and breathing. In addition, as the polyp grows it can result in an overgrowth of bacteria and sinus infection. The actual cause of polyps appears to be unknown yet unlike colon and bladder polyps, nasal polyps are almost never malignant. Typically, polyps are reoccurring in nature and cause bacteria and mucus to become trapped.
During a sinusitis infection the cilia, small hairs in the nasal passages, cannot perform their designated function of removing debris and pathogens in the sinus cavity. If polyps are present, removal of debris is even less likely. The cilia function to flush out bacteria and excess mucus of the sinus area. The symptoms that typically occur during a sinusitis infection are facial pressure and pain, thick discolored mucus, congestion, and cough. Patients who have nasal polyps are likely to have difficulty breathing through the nose due to the obstruction of the nasal polyp in the airway. How to treat a sinusitis infection with polyps There are many treatments for sinusitis infection with nasal polyps, they are the same treatments as those without nasal poylps. Physicians typically prescribe oral antibiotics for sinusitis infections. Oral antibiotics and oral medications work by traveling through the blood stream via the blood vessels to the infected area. However, the sinus cavities have very few blood vessels in comparison to other parts of the body. The sinus cavity is dependent on those few blood vessels to deliver the medication to the infected sinus cavity, making the treatment limited in delivering medication to the infected sinus area. Nasal sprays are also frequently used to alleviate the symptoms of sinusitis and nasal polyps.
· Sinus surgery is recommended when the standard procedures for treating the infection have failed. Unfortunately, sinus surgery only offers temporary relief as surgery tends to provide a small reduction in the inflammation in the sinus cavity. Sinus surgery typically only removes a portion of the infection resulting in a return of the sinusitis infection. In addition, nasal polyps tend to be recurring and are caused by chronic sinusitis and inflammatory conditions. A better method for sinusitis infections – with or without nasal polyps!
