Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis vs. Sinus Infection

Acute bacterial sinusitis is an infection of the sinus cavities caused by bacteria.

It usually is preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants.

Unlike a cold, or allergy, bacterial sinusitis requires a physician's diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic to cure the infection and prevent future complication.

Sinusitis Surgery

Sinusitis is a condition caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities.  When a person has existing swelling that is caused by a cold or allergy, bacteria can attack the already swollen cavity lining, causing greater inflammation.  When this large amount of inflammation exists, the cilia can no longer flush out the bacteria and mucus, so the sinusitis infection begins.  Some of the several symptoms of sinusitis include cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and post nasal drip.  When the infection lasts for twelve or more weeks it is considered chronic and can have added symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell and the patient may become fatigued.

There are many treatment forms for sinusitis.  Sinus surgery is usually used as a last resort when all other forms of treatment have failed.  Sinus surgery usually ends up being unsuccessful since the surgeons only remove a portion of the inflammation and infection, so oftentimes the sinusitis infection returns.  Also sinus surgery is usually a very painful procedure and patients often end up receiving several of these surgeries in their lifetime.  Another form of treatment that is often used first is oral antibiotics.  Oral antibiotics work on infections by traveling through the blood stream to the infected area.  In the sinus cavities however, there are very few blood vessels so it is difficult for an effective amount of medication to be delivered to the sinusitis infection.

Sinus Dynamics is the most innovative form of treatment for sinusitis.  Sinus Dynamics antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and anti-fungals are used in a nebulized form, making it easy for the 3.2 micron particle size to make their way through the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavity, and up to the sinusitis infection.  Sinus Dynamics nebulized antibiotics are much more effective than oral antibiotics since they are directly nebulized into the sinuses so they can easily enter the blood stream.  There are little to no side effects with Sinus Dynamics since only a small amount of topical medication is used.  With a 98% success rate in patients, Sinus Dynamics is clearly the safest and most effective treatment for sinusitis.
