Preventing Sinusitis

To avoid developing sinusitis during a cold or allergy attack, keep your sinuses clear by:

  • Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant
  • To keep nasal discharge thin, you can use this technique: gently blow your nose and block one nostril by blowing through the other
  • Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain
  • If you have allergies try to avoid contact with substances that trigger attacks

Allergy testing, followed by appropriate allergy treatments, may increase your tolerance of allergy-causing substances.

Sinusitis Symptom

 

Sinusitis is caused by a blockage of bacteria and mucus in the sinus cavities.  The blockage starts when a person has a cold or allergy which causes swelling of the sinus cavities.  When bacteria get into the cavities and attack the already swollen lining greater inflammation occurs and the cilia can no longer wash out the bacteria and mucus and the sinusitis infection begins.  There are many symptoms of a sinusitis infection.  One common symptom is postnasal drip which is caused by the back up of mucus in the cavities.  Some other symptoms include cough, congestion, green nasal discharge, and facial pain and pressure.  Another symptom that a person with sinusitis may experience is a headache due to pressure from the inflammation pushing on the nerves.

 

There are several treatments for sinusitis which includes nasal sprays which will not offer relief past the front of the sinuses since its particle size is too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection itself.  Oral antibiotics are also commonly used.  Oral antibiotics work by traveling through the blood stream to the area of infection.  In this sinus cavities there are a small amount of blood vessels, so with oral antibiotics an efficient amount of the medication cannot be delivered to the sinusitis infection.  Surgery is usually a treatment which is used when all others have failed.  Surgery is usually only successful for a short period of time due to the fact that the doctor only removes a portion of the inflammation and infection so it usually returns.
